This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:
Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)
…or something like this:
The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.
As a new WordPress user, you should go to your dashboard to delete this page and create new pages for your content. Have fun!

In 2016, our parent company, Swire, introduced SwireTHRIVE, a group-wide environmental sustainability strategy addressing every part of Swire’s operations. In support of this endeavor, we focus on pursuing connecting sustainability to all our business goals.
The 2022 Sustainable Development Report covers the activities of all facilities within United States Cold Storage during the 2022 calendar year. This report focuses on the USCS workforce and their protection both financially and on the job, the impact that our operations have on the environment, and how we plan to impact future generations. This is the eighth iteration of this report to follow the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standard for sustainability reporting. While previous annual reports have been issued to Swire without GRI standards in place, thus some metrics are not fully reported due to limited data availability and recording.
Our Environmental Sustainable Development Strategy has resulted in several eco-achievements:
In 2022 we launched the Green Team a sustainability strategy at US Cold. Our goal is to encourage sustainability within our organization and beyond, by fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and implementing practices that reduce our environmental impact. We are committed to advocating for sustainable practices, engaging and educating employees, and partnering on a local level to drive change. We can achieve this by, reducing carbon footprint, energy and water consumption and usage, waste reduction, and promoting sustainable sourcing.

A message from our President & CEO, Larry Alderfer
Dear Valued Customers, Colleagues, and Cold Chain Partners,
I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits as we close out this very busy summer season. I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to all our great customers, from coast to coast, and share some thoughts about our continued unrelenting ‘Best in Cold’ journey serving and supporting the cold chain.
Celebrating Our Progress
The past few months have been a rewarding period, marked by significant milestones and celebratory moments, emphasizing the remarkable commitment of our team and the invaluable support of our valued customers.
Several standout moments from this quarter are our engagement in the Warehouse of the Year competitions. Our US Cold facilities in Covington, TN, and Hazleton, PA, received prestigious awards for their outstanding performance, recognized by both Unilever and Gorton’s. These accolades are not mere tokens of appreciation; they symbolize the unwavering dedication and tireless efforts our teams invest in guaranteeing the highest level of care for our customers’ products and services to their customers.
I would also like to express my gratitude to our customers who support these programs. They not only engage our Cold Crew but also provide a clear focus on key metrics that create opportunities to drive our commitment to exceptional service. These programs also provide for deeper levels of communication and interaction throughout our organization. These engagements foster so many wonderful relationships that transcend “business as usual” driving combined innovation and the continual pursuit of service excellence and success.
The Strength of Our Connections
Our journey has been defined by strong and lasting customer relationships, and I want to extend my gratitude for the bonds we’ve formed together. Our partnership with so many of our customers spans decades and serves as a testament to the values of trust, collaboration, and mutual growth we all achieve and represent. Thank you.
Throughout this summer, I have also had the privilege of witnessing the commitment of our Cold Crew, celebrating career milestones, and enjoying the conviviality that describes our culture. We’ve had numerous team members commemorating 5, 10, and even 20 years at US Cold. I am particularly proud to acknowledge Tracy DeAnda, who is marking an impressive 40 years with our company. Her path from a Customer Service Representative to Customer Service Supervisor, and ultimately to Operations Manager is nothing short of inspirational. Tracy embodies the opportunities available at US Cold and serves as an inspiration to us all.
A Bittersweet Farewell — Rod Noll’s Retirement
Before I conclude, there is a bittersweet announcement I wish to share. Rod Noll, SVP Western Region, an absolute legend, will be transitioning to his retirement journey at the end of this year. His 42-year career with us has been extraordinary, and his influence on our business, especially in the Western region, is immeasurable. Rod’s secret to success?
His dedication to our customers and his appetite for growth. It is said that a great leader can make a decision within seven breaths; Rod captures the essence of this spirit. His contribution to our success will forever be remembered, and we wish him a well-deserved and joyful retirement.
Charting Our Course for the Future
Thanks to the support of our parent company, Swire, we continue on our fast pace of expansion. We broke ground on our new fully automated site in Lake County in Indiana, establishing operations across a 110-acre site off I-65 at Highway 2 and Colorado Street in Hebron, IN. This will be our second location in the great state of Indiana.
We’re allocating 70 acres to constructing and equipping a 13.58 million-cubic-foot public refrigerated warehouse, along with associated trailer drop areas, a dock, and COLDshare Consolidation services while reserving 40 acres for a potential customer to build an adjacent production facility in the coming years.
Once complete, the facility will house more than 43,400 pallet positions, including approximately 35,600 positions serviced by an automated storage and retrieval system and about 7,700 positions with our multifarious automation technology.
We plan to install a solar array that will provide 100% renewable energy to the warehouse, enabling UCSC to continue on our path to using 100% renewable energy by 2030.
In conclusion, I wish to convey my heartfelt appreciation to our cherished customers. Your unyielding trust, invaluable partnership, and belief in our mission of service have consistently supported the path of our journey to always be “Best in Cold.”

USCS supports ‘FRIDGE” Act legislation for cold chain in emerging markets.
Industry leaders distinguish themselves in many obvious ways–by size, innovation, acquisitions, or influence. On other occasions, they demonstrate it behind the scenes and support the right causes for the right reasons. Sometimes this means more time spent in Washington, D.C., than in a warehouse.
USCS executives took active roles in the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) Policy Forum this June, just before bi-partisan legislative efforts in July for the Fortifying Refrigeration Infrastructure and Developing Global Exports (FRIDGE) Act.
“One of the largest limiting factors to growing export markets for frozen and refrigerated food and agriculture products is insufficient cold chain capacity in developing countries,” says Lowell Randel, GCCA Senior Vice President of Government and Legal Affairs. “GCCA saw an opportunity to address this challenge through the Farm Bill that is up for reauthorization in 2023 and we drafted a legislative proposal that has now become the FRIDGE Act.”
He continues, “The FRIDGE Act would strengthen USDA’s trade programs by adding a focus on building the global food supply chain for frozen and refrigerated products. The Act will help GCCA members such as USCS open new markets for the products they store and distribute. Improved cold chain capacity also will help reduce food loss and waste and improve food security and nutrition in emerging markets. USCS played a prominent role in GCCA’s Policy Forum in June and actively participated in meetings with key congressional offices to build support for the FRIDGE Act.”
The FRIDGE Act was introduced as H.R. 4612 in early July by Reps. Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Tracey Mann (R-KS), James Costa (D-
CA) and Salud Carbajal (D-CA). Presenting the bill to the Senate were Mike Braun (R-IN) and John Fetterman (D-PA). Senator Braun also toured USCS’ Lebanon, IN, warehouse this summer and met with General Manager Adam Ashley.
According to the U.S. International Trade Administration, cold chain systems are crucial to the growth of global trade in perishable products and to the worldwide availability of food.
Each year, billions of tons of perishable food products and millions of dollars worth of U.S. exports are lost due to poor cold chain systems in developing markets. Increased investments in cold chain capacity will also help to decrease the more than one billion metric tons of global food waste created every year. Many of these losses result from a lack of proper facilities, improper food safety handling procedures, and insufficient training for those personnel working in the cold chain.

Milestone Moment
USCS Tracy celebrates Tracy DeAnda’s 40th work anniversary.
USCS Tracy, CA, hosted a surprise luncheon and formal dinner to celebrate the 40th work anniversary of Operations Manager Tracy DeAnda. Also on hand to celebrate the event was USCS President & CEO Larry Alderfer, who first worked with DeAnda at USCS Union City, CA.
“Anyone who knows Tracy, knows she is a true legend,” notes Tamara Palefsky, Continuous Improvement Manager, Western Region. “She helped us roll out our original warehouse management system and spent years as a Customer Service Manager to give our customers the best service and solutions possible.
She has a hunger to learn and more recently has expanded into operations as an Operations Manager. We are so proud to work with her and hope she’s around for another 40 years!”
Quite a Catch!
USCS Hazleton, PA, earns successive wins as “Gorton’s Warehouse of the Year”
Usually, the best fish stories involve “the one that got away. Yet here’s a case of landing that big trophy fish (or at least the trophy) in the net.
This summer saw frozen seafood leader Gorton’s present its annual 2022-2023 “Warehouse of the Year” award to USCS Hazleton, PA. Importantly, it marked the second successive win for Hazleton, which also captured Gorton’s top honors for their outstanding 2021- 2022 warehouse performance. Nationwide, Gorton’s works with eight public refrigerated warehouse partners (including five USCS locations).
Hazleton has won the award six times with performance against eight to 10 “hard” key performance indicators (such as shipping errors, and inbound and outbound loading times) as well as additional “soft” evaluations. These consider the sense of urgency, the quality and timeliness of communication and the ability to formulate and execute creative solutions to problems and urgent situations.
“General Managers will tell you that our program is pretty tough, and their teams work hard to perform to our high standards,” admits Nicole Black, Gorton’s Senior Fulfillment and warehousing Manager. “With the field of players in the warehousing industry, the importance of customer service and the ability and willingness to truly partner with us to deliver the best service to our customers–can’t be overstated.” Black also talks about Hazleton’s successive wins. “Coming slowly out of the pandemic, our 2021-2022 sales continued to grow, and like so many manufacturing companies, we faced several challenges due to the ongoing supply chain disruptions,” she recalls.
“The Hazleton team consistently executed at a high level, and the proactive communication that Customer Service Representative Shannan Ford provided was top-notch. Solid execution and reliable, accurate communication were key. Our case fill rates were not perfect during this time, but our customers knew they could count on us to communicate in a timely manner and execute creative solutions to support their business.”
Considering the period from May 2022 to June 2023, Black adds, “Things slowly started to normalize last year. Supply chain disruptions lessened, our fill rates improved, and we’ve seen more consistent order patterns with fewer customer ‘emergencies.’ Despite the pandemic-related challenges of the last three years, USCS’ Hazleton team maintained their exceptional performance. As the warehouse that services the largest percentage of our business, builds the most custom mods, and ships to many of our most demanding and sensitive retailers, this speaks volumes to their hard work and dedication. Hazleton truly has a dream team working on all facets of our business— encompassing customer service, operations and transportation.”
USCS Hazleton General Manager Ryan Horvath is understandably proud of the entire team. “We are most proud of our customer service, warehouse, and transportation teams working together in conjunction with Gorton’s to not only successfully service the business but having the ability to pivot tasks accordingly to satisfy Gorton’s customer needs. We would like to thank Nicole and her group for not only effectively communicating expectations, but also ensuring we had the proper schedules and inventory levels to successfully meet demand.”
Looking back more broadly, Black says Gorton’s is pleased with its USCS relationship. “Our partnership with US Cold has grown during the last 30+ years and continues to become even stronger,” she says. “Their systems, operational processes and business practices support a high standard of excellence across all aspects of warehouse operations. They strive to be ahead of the curve on IT systems and new technologies to drive operational efficiencies. We also share a dedication to sustainability efforts, and this is an important focus area for Gorton’s. “Most of all, US Cold’s people set the company apart,” she adds. “Day in and day out, we see an impressive level of dedication from employees at all levels within the organization. Their words and actions deliver a clear message that our business matters; they care about the success of our business and how we are perceived by our own customers. For us, partnership is not just a word we use loosely when we talk about our relationship with US Cold. It’s a genuine, honest characterization of our relationship and a key component to our success.”
Future in its Sites
USCS designing “Best in Cold” features into new Hebron, IN, warehouse.
In the commercial construction world, facility expansions are somewhat commonplace. By contrast, it’s not every day that corporate engineers get to plan and design a new greenfield facility. And that’s what makes USCS’ planned new site in Hebron, IN, so remarkable.
Starting with its September 2023 groundbreaking, USCS engineers and third-party design-build partners take the first step toward a USCS operation that combines the best of cold storage design and automation. Officials expect by fall 2025 to complete this 13.6 million cubic-foot frozen public warehouse. Upon completion, it will house 43,421 pallet positions and be ready to serve a wide range of customers.
“USCS’ Hebron warehouse design is the third iteration of automated warehouse design. It incorporates lessons learned from numerous USCS automated systems and USCS’ experience in layerpick technology,” notes Michael Lynch, Senior Vice President, Engineering. “The warehouse incorporates both an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) coupled with a more conventional, very narrow aisle storage section.” He adds, “The ASRS systems take technologies and lessons learned from our automated systems in Lebanon, IN, McDonough (GA) 2, and Minooka, IL.
Meanwhile, Hebron incorporates the very narrow aisle design we used in Lake City, FL. Hebron also incorporates a semiautomated, layer-pick system already deployed at numerous USCS locations. This hybrid design should be the basis for future automated warehouses going forward.” Among those also highly involved in the Hebron site is Adam Ashley, General Manager at USCS’ automated facility in Lebanon, IN (northwest of Indianapolis). Ashley says many advantages will be designed into USCS Hebron to make it …
… Worker Friendly: USCS Hebron projects to employ 42 people for a three-shift operation. One interesting benefit of automation is that it will remove warehouse associates from working in a 0°F to -5°F environment. The automated section will not have operators in the space and conventional equipment will have cabs that are able to maintain an ambient temperature.
… Driver Friendly: USCS Hebron is designed to streamline the carrier experience. All functions related to check-in and check-out processes, related paperwork and printing bills of lading will be handled at the Welcome Center (formerly guard house). Arriving drivers will be directed to the appropriate door or staging area, product will be loaded or unloaded and then the driver will be directed back to the Welcome Center to retrieve appropriate paperwork. Drivers will not have to leave their trucks if they choose not to. In addition, the Hebron site will utilize and have a dedicated lane for a new check-in process provided by Vector (similar to TSA Pre-Check). This will minimize wait times at the Welcome Center.
… Product Friendly: Products will be received on a refrigerated dock, placed on automated conveyors and directed into the warehouse; and when loading, product will be brought to the dock and placed on the trailers. This will greatly reduce dwell time on the dock for frozen products. There will be four induct locations for receiving products with each location being able to receive one truck. There are three loading zones with each zone being able to queue 58 pallets to load two trucks. … Customer Friendly: Positioned just southeast of Chicago, the Hebron warehouse helps USCS enhance its frozen COLDshare Consolidation (CsC) program with less-than-truckload savings for processor-shipper customers. Hebron is within 65 miles of sister operations in Wilmington and Minooka, IL, and within 100 miles of USCS Lebanon, IN (northwest of Indianapolis). Hebron’s location allows USCS to coordinate shipments to maximize the density of trucks that go through USCS’ CsC program.

USCS Sets New Industry Standard
New custom freezer gear boasts added function, fashion.
In architectural design, the guiding adage is that “form follows function.” Interestingly enough, that also applies to the world of extreme cold weather gear–and you could add a measure of fashion, as well. This summer finds USCS rolling out a year-long, companywide refresh of freezer clothing for warehouse dock workers, reach drivers, leads, supervisors, inventory control personnel and visitors. It’s the first such overhaul in about five years and a crossfunctional USCS team helped guide some custom, exclusive clothing designs and features from RefrigiWear, the company’s longtime supplier. “There have been advances in freezer gear technology and features so we felt it was a good time to re-evaluate,” says Brian Murphy, USCS Senior Manager of Strategic Procurement. “The new gear will be more fashionable and functional, while it maintains the same level of warmth and protection. It also will meet ANSI 3 safety standards.”
Murphy led an eight-person, multifunctional group that reviewed aspects of comfort, safety and visual appeal. The committee included senior and departmental representatives from corporate development, safety, operations and even marketing. Its process included worker surveys and a focus group study for workers’ recommended improvements. For his part, Murphy acknowledges USCS Marketing Coordinator Dominica Veneziano as a lead point person for the project. He likewise credits Lisa Battino Vice President, Regulatory Compliance & Safety, for recommending that USCS embrace the industry’s latest ANSI Class 3 safety standards for freezer gear.
Here’s a review of the freezer gear program and its benefits:
Form: USCS’ freezer gear update will involve all branded jackets, bibs and sweatshirts. This new clothing is custom designed for USCS and will not be sold to any other RefrigiWear customers.
Function: New gear, comfort rated to -40°F, has several improvements that reflect wearer recommendations. Enhancements include… … more reflective trim and high-visibility features that meet ANSI Class 3 safety standards … bib straps with a more secure closing mechanism for a better fit … hand-warmer pockets for improved comfort and warmth … radio clips with better placement, improved efficiency … badge holder on sleeve for improved efficiency, convenience.
Fashion: “Workers will appreciate the additional features and safety–all with the same consistent level of RefrigiWear quality,” notes Murphy. “We have also added a feature involving fabric, stickon patches for employee recognition. Patches can recognize individual or group achievements and there is space on each arm for recognition.” “USCS already has the reputation as ‘Best in Cold’ and this freezer gear upgrade will make it more visibly obvious that we stand out from the competition,” says Murphy. “We take pride in US Cold and we can wear this new gear in pride as well.”
Where Technique Meets Tech
USCS uses multiple technologies to improve, enhance worker safety.
The common admonition is to work smarter–not harder. And that’s exactly what USCS strives for in protecting its most important asset, it’s employees. For the past several years, the company has invested in and implemented as many as five new technologies to better train and protect employees serving in the most demanding warehouse environments.
“Technology is changing the world of safety and USCS is a leader when it comes to creating a safe workplace,” says Lisa Battino, CSP, USCS Vice President of Compliance & Safety. “It’s important that we invest in these technologies to advance our safety journey to the next level and remain Best in Safety.” “Without US Cold employees, you don’t have US Cold Storage,” adds Ian Toomey, USCS Corporate Health and Safety Specialist.
“It is our top priority to keep our employees safe and ensure that they make it home to their families. And as US Cold grows and expands, safety needs to grow and expand. This means we continue to branch out and looking for new technologies that help our warehouses continuously improve.”
Toomey identifies five technologies utilized at various warehouses throughout USCS’ network. They include two wearable applications StrongArm and Modjoul–as well as forklift monitors iWarehouse and Infolink. A fifth technology, VOXEL, is a newer artificial intelligence based software to more broadly monitor ergonomics, area controls, personal protective equipment and vehicles.
Here’s how Toomey describes each technology and its benefits.
TECH: VOXEL
How it Works: Voxel is an artificial intelligence software that pairs with existing camera systems at USCS warehouses. It absorbs hours of video feed, analyzes it, and produces real-time data. The tech simply involves one small box that plugs into the server-camera room at a US Cold location. USCS safety managers use an online VOXEL platform and dashboard to later coach employees.
How it Benefits USCS: “Each USCS location uses VOXEL in different ways. However, within a few weeks of using the technology, US Cold sites noticed safety violations or unsafe acts that managers were previously unaware of,” says Toomey. “This allowed sites to make improvements to already existing processes, and develop new safe work practices. Some of the most common items USCS monitors are missing personal protective equipment, spills, ergonomics (correct lifting posture), and forklift piggybacking (where two forklifts follow right behind one another going through a door).”
Where Utilized: Laredo, TX; West Syracuse, UT; Quakertown and Bethlehem, PA; Wilmington, IL
Tech: StrongArm
How it Works: An employee wears this like a small backpack. It targets ergonomics and correct lifting habits and it tracks individual movements. New hires wear this during their first few weeks and collected data help onsite managers better coach those employees on proper case lifting and pallet stacking.
How it Benefits USCS: This training aide reinforces proper lifting techniques.
Where Utilized: Lebanon, IN, and Wilmington, IL
Tech: Modjoul
How it Works: This wearable technology goes around the waist. It is essentially a belt that gathers data related to ergonomics, temperature and forklift driver activities, among other things.
How it Benefits USCS: Modjoul data help safety experts better pinpoint where and how to train workers on lifting techniques.
Where Utilized: Dallas Halifax and Dallas Cockrell Hill, TX; Tulare South and Fresno, CA

Rod Noll – Best in the West
USCS celebrates Rod Noll, Senior Vice President, Western Region
The end of 2023 not only found USCS celebrating the holiday season—but also the 42-year career of one of its seasoned veterans, Rod Noll. This Fresno, CA, native’s career has grown and mirrored USCS’s overall western growth. A graduate of Cal State-Fresno, he left a construction supply company in February 1982 to become a Management Trainee at USCS Fresno. This coming February 2024, he will retire as Senior Vice President, Western Region.
For the record, USCS promoted Noll to Manager for its Fresno facility in 1983 and then Manager for its Tulare operation that opened in 1990. In 1991, USCS named Noll Vice President and Area Manager for USCS’s California Central Valley facilities. He later also assumed responsibilities for northern California in 1998. USCS later named Noll (among others) in 2015 as a Regional Senior Vice President.
“I am overjoyed to look at USCS’s nine ultra- modern facilities that we have built and expanded out west here over my career,” says Rod. “It’s also been rewarding to see so many younger colleagues growing their careers and taking predominant roles in the company.
More than anything, job fulfillment is all about the people.”
Asked about those people who most influenced his own career, Rod names three:
Pat Fitzpatrick, former Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (serving 1967- 2004): “Pat interviewed me three times before hiring me. He had a huge impact on me and served as my primary mentor. He was a boss who would pat you on the back and kick you in the butt at the same time—and you wouldn’t feel bad. He kept things lighthearted while doing his job.”
David Harlan, former President & CEO (serving 1979-2019): “Dave had a significant impact on my career, even from 3,000 miles away. He encouraged me to grow our footprint and went to our board to support every recommendation for building and expanding. That also meant supporting our 2014 expansion in Utah. He always said, ‘I’ll support you 100%.’”
Larry Alderfer, President & CEO: “Larry has been a positive force for me and the entire company since he joined USCS. I worked with him early in his career in Union City, CA, and I could tell from his energy and enthusiasm that he was destined to grow within our company. At one point, he faced the prospect having to leave the company to go back to the Northeast. I told him that we were looking to build there as well and talked to our management about this top-flight, young professional who could help. So he stayed with us. He’s very gifted, humble and transcends the work with his attitude. I like to tell our customers that I taught him everything he knows. LOL.”
On a more reflective note, Rod quite easily shares the spotlight for USCS’s western growth.“I’ve never been content to be the face of this region. Instead, I’ve loved getting into projects and making things happen. And when you look at our network, you can see that I didn’t do it alone. Our facilities, our people and service reputation are the envy of the industry, particularly here in California and the Central Valley. I’m also excited for our future, which includes more expansions and greenfield building.”
BEST WISHES, ROD!
“It’s hard for me to find the words for what Rod has meant to me in my career and my life. He has been my boss and mentor, a warrior companion on the West coast, a friend and even a sports provocateur. Rod has been the essence of the US Cold ‘soul’ and he created and led our success in the West. Above it all, he’s a devoted husband and loving father. Legend!”
—Larry Alderfer, President & CEO
“Working alongside Rod for 42 years has been one of the highlights of my USCS career. The South and the West have always had a special relationship and I credit (and thank) Rod for that. We have had many, many good times that we will remember forever. For me it is not goodbye, as I know we will continue to be close. However, I do want to take this time to wish Rod a very lengthy and healthy retirement. Well deserved buddy!”
—George Cruz, Senior Vice President, Southern Region
“I have worked with Rod at many different levels throughout more than 30 years at USCS. Rod has been nothing but supportive and has encouraged and challenged me to keep pushing forward. Ten years ago, when I moved from Operations back to Human Resources, I was able to work more closely with him. He is a consummate professional and his even-keeled approach to situations has been something that I have always admired.”
—Michelle Grimes, Senior Vice President, Human Resources
“Rod Noll is a remarkable leader and outstanding individual, who leaves behind a legacy of exemplary leadership that has resonated throughout our company and the industry. Rod, thanks for the years of service!”
—Mickey Hoffmann, Senior President, Corporate Development
“Congratulations Rod on your retirement! Over my 20 years with United States Cold Storage, you have always been a steady and positive influence not just for the company—but also for my USCS career. It is nothing short of amazing to look back and see how much growth you have directed in our Western Region over the span of 42 amazing years! This growth is not just in our sites but the tremendous team that you have assembled. If there is a silver lining for all of us, it is that you will be shepherding us in our land purchases and expansion projects for years to come. Just make sure and take advantage of ‘retirement’ to spend some of that extra time with Sheri, the girls and maybe a hobby or two!”
—Chris Harrington, Vice President, West Region
“I have been blessed to have worked with Rod Noll for 29 years and, I’m so thankful for his leadership, mentoring, and most of all his friendship. Rod not only has made such a huge impact not only on me— but also on our entire company. We will definitely miss seeing him daily. Congratulations on your retirement, and I wish you all the best on this new chapter in your life.”
—Chad Cox, Area Director, Southern Central Valley, CA & UT
Challenge Accepted!
Cold Crew members team up, take to the streets during the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend.
One fall weekend demonstrated just how much USCS employees enjoy teaming up both inside the office—and literally outside of work, as well. The company’s corporate headquarters is in Camden, NJ, directly across from Philadelphia, which hosted several running races— including its annual Patriot Challenge Marathon and Half Marathon—during the Nov. 17-19 weekend.
Twenty-five USCS employees— representing all functional departments— gathered on Saturday, Nov. 18, to run in one or more of three races: a Patriot Challenge 8K (4.97 miles), the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon (13.1 miles) or the Rothman Orthopedic 8K (4.97 miles). Meanwhile, United States Cold Storage sponsored the entire weekend event, which also raised
funds for the American Association of Cancer Research.
“We wanted to do this as a group so we all could run together and that’s why we picked Saturday,” says Frederick Caracciolo, USCS Procurement Manager. “We had a great response and I think it’s something USCS will continue to do as we move forward.”

First-Person Perspectives: What Motivated You to Run?
Fred Caracciolo: “I knew there are a lot of runners in Camden and thought it would be a great idea to get everyone together to support the American Association of Cancer Research.”
Paul Thomas: “It was a bonding experience with my sister, in memory of my mother.”
Josh Holi: “I find motivation from those around me who have running experience, but I think it’s more discipline than motivation. Regardless of motivation, it’s difficult to make those long runs during training. Having the discipline to do it even when you don’t want to is the quality I believe will get you across the finish line.”
Tommy Quinn: “My motivation comes from the people I am running with. I honestly hate running but knowing I’m doing
it with friends helps me find the drive I need…I looked forward
to cheering on my co-workers, especially the ones participating in two long races.”
Jennifer Lantro: “To end the race season on a fun note—smiling!”
Anna Johnson: “It’s all about crossing the finish line and a sense of accomplishment. You have to be dedicated to the commitment, which is why I like running.”
Natalie Larson: “I love the camaraderie of an event like this. Not just with US Cold but with the city of Philadelphia. If the whole city is essentially shutting down for something, I want to be part of it!”
Zafer Louisa: “It’s exciting to run alongside other team members from USCS. I appreciate Fred’s efforts in making it possible and look forward to seeing everyone finish strong.”
Eddie Russell: “I was looking forward to a new challenge with the Cold Crew!”
Elizabeth Eachus: “It’s fun to work towards a goal and running has always been a way to clear my head. Living in Philly, there are so many great places to run, which can make training fun.”
Mary Magee: “It’s fun feeling accomplished after a run and hearing the kids encourage me from the stroller. LOL.”
James L’Erario: “I did this for health reasons and because Fred insisted.”
Ravi Balike: “I just joined the organization about two months ago and I want to show support, mingle with the group at USCS and obviously, have fun!”
Nate Erlandson: “The various fitness and well- being improvements keep me motivated to run daily. And I just simply enjoy being able to run far distances. This also is a cool company event to participate in.”
Katie McElgunn: “To do something fun with my coworkers!”
Thomas Hrivnak: “I run for Veterans who never made it home.”
Gowtham Thangavelu: “Maintain Health for self-satisfaction and for my family. I also wanted to face a new challenge that I had thought about— but never done.”
Julia Giarratana: “I’m motivated for this race by my co-workers who are also running this year! I’m excited to experience the marathon weekend with the people I spend the majority of my time with. I’m also motivated by the fact that we will all be celebrating together after the race.”
Ice Cream of the Crop
USCS Covington wins Unilever 2022 “Warehouse of the Year” award.
When it’s hot outside, nothing beats a summertime ice cream treat. Then again, what if you received an award for storing and shipping ice cream to hungry consumers nationwide? That’s just what happened for the team at USCS Covington, TN, which closed this July with a celebration as “Warehouse of the Year” in Unilever’s United States frozen network.
For the record, USCS Covington is a plant- attached warehouse built in 2015 beside Unilever’s own ice cream production facility. USCS Covington annually competes with three other temperature-controlled warehouses for performance scores. Unilever key performance indicators include safety recordable incidents, on-time shipping and inventory accuracy. This was USCS Covington’s second time to win such a prestigious award.
Groups of senior Unilever and USCS officials visited USCS Covington on July 25 for a celebration that included a catered lunch for employees. USCS also presented its Cold Crew members with hooded sweatshirts and t-shirts to commemorate the award.
Aaron Sanner is Unilever’s Associate Director, Frozen-North America.“Daily collaboration between US Cold Covington and Unilever drove best in class performance across our Frozen Warehouse Network,” he says. “Covington led all distribution centers in our key performance areas including Layerpick, VIP Savings, On Time Loading, DC Driven Warehouse Cuts and Carrier Appointment Availability.”
“From a Unilever perspective, US Cold is a key partner that continues to support us on service and future-fit supply chain initiatives,” he adds. “USCS always is willing and able to step up in the face of adversity when we have unforeseen challenges elsewhere in our network.”
USCS Covington General Manager Matthew Hughes is understandably proud of his team’s accomplishments. “In 2022, we brought dependability and consistency to our relationship with Unilever. We demonstrated flexibility and embraced process improvement and volume spikes when needed,” he says. “As our competition faced challenges, our team found ways to excel. Our team put the customer first, stepped in to handle everything and smoothed issues to the point that our customer’s receiver network never felt the impact of a miss by the competition. We all contributed and this would not have been possible without everyone working in one direction.”
Golf – and Growth!
USCS hosts outing, talks expansion to support growing western customer base.
This October saw United States Cold Storage host a golf outing for as many as 30 customers in Carmel, CA. In part, it simply represented was a fun day to hit the links. More importantly, it was another way to strengthen USCS’s link to a growing customer base.
“Our President & CEO Larry Alderfer often says this and it’s true. ‘The Western Region is the engine for USCS,’” says David Carr, Vice President of Business Development at USCS. “The continued growth we see here is a testimonial to all our associates, who provide ‘Best in Cold Service.’
It is also a reflection of the steady growth we see from our customer- partners in the West.” In support, USCS plans in February 2024 to break ground for a 7.48-million-cubic-foot Phase Three expansion at its McClellan, CA (Sacramento) facility. The company also has purchased more land in southern California, in Shafter, CA, just northwest of Bakersfield. It expects to develop a new greenfield location there in 2024.
As for the golf, it was USCS’s first opportunity to host a Western outing since COVID.
“It is always great to get together with our partners, talk about USCS growth and industry trends,” Carr adds. “We discuss what our partners are seeing within their businesses and what we see within the market. This is a great industry with great people and ultimately what I enjoy most is the opportunity to spend quality time with them— getting to know all of them personally.”
USCS Hosts Carrier Conference
First face to face meeting in five years lets USCS and carrier partners share information, celebrate achievement.
Online meeting platforms are effective for daily business basics. Yet there’s no contest when online is compared to in-person, face-to-face meetings. Live settings not only help you conduct business—but also build relationships.
That’s why USCS was pleased to literally meet and greet its carrier partners in mid-October outside Chicago. It was the company’s first in-person Carrier Conference since 2018 (pre-COVID) and it drew 150 people including 20 USCS leaders and 130 carrier attendees representing 85 companies from coast to coast. The one-day event featured industry presentations, a panel discussion and as many as 11 national and regional carrier awards. A closing dinner also gave USCS and carrier representatives more opportunities to collaborate and continue to strengthen relations.
“Our carrier partners are amazing. One of the main reasons we pushed to have this event is to show our appreciation to the US Cold carrier base,” says Michael Carlisle, USCS Director of Logistics Operations. “I was truly touched by the way they showed the gratitude back to our US Cold team and the efforts we have made to build these lasting relationships.”
He adds, “Carriers enjoy hearing updates about our company’s overall direction and strategic initiatives. They know that we value them as critical industry partners and this year’s high attendance reflects that belief.”
USCS was excited to discuss its new Vector “check-in” process and efforts to help even its smallest carriers become SmartWay certified.
Software from San Francisco’s Vector Labs allows facility personnel to connect directly to drivers via digital check-in. This foundational module not only streamlines the check-in process, but also opens up a real-time chat with the driver via SMS.
Carlisle says Vector also presents future options of going paperless for some shipments. USCS currently offers Vector technology at two locations and will continue to roll out this technology nationwide during 2024.
Separately, USCS’s goal is to have 75% of all loads moved by a SmartWay Carrier by 2030. Carlisle says the company will provide guidance and education to carrier partners to demonstrate the benefits of being a SmartWay Carrier and how to gain certification. Its basics include measuring supply chain footprint, benchmarking performance, reporting results and committing to continuous innovation and efficiency.
Other presentations included a review of alternative energy vehicles and near-term emission requirements, as well as a look at new filters available now to reduce emissions on semi-tractors and trailers. Two carrier executives also joined a five-member panel discussion on “What Makes a Great Carrier/ Shipper Partner?”
“During the panel discussion, carriers were able to take a live survey to contribute to our conversation,” Carlisle notes. “We asked them to use one word to describe a great carrier/ shipper partner and their overwhelming response was ‘communication.’ We look forward to hosting this event again next year. Not only does it give us a chance to see carriers in person, but we also can update them on USCS initiatives, market outlooks, technology updates and other matters.”
USCS Connects for a Cause
Employees support their communities, regional charities nationwide.
United States Cold Storage concluded its third annual “Connect for a Cause Campaign” on October 31. Employees raised $215,000 for seven non-profit organizations including The Unforgotten Haven, Make- A-Wish Foundation, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the Valley Children’s Healthcare Foundation.
Positioned within USCS’s Corporate Responsibility Program (“Cold Crew Cares”), Connect for a Cause is a regionally-based, employee-driven fundraising campaign. It’s designed to connect employees to their co- workers, their communities, and meaningful causes. Foundationally, it’s deeply rooted in USCold’s commitment to be an excellent corporate citizen and give back to the neighborhoods where company employees live and work.
Keith Mowery is USCS Executive Vice President, Logistics & West Region. “Since its inception three years ago, I have been blown away by the generosity and creativity of our COLDcrew members across the country in relation to the Connect for a Cause campaign,” he says. “Being a responsible and good corporate steward is important to USCS as we support and engage with the communities we are a part of. The success of this campaign each year gives a small glimpse into the ethos of US Cold—revealing our identity shaped by generosity, concern for one another, and a commitment to our community.”
Paige Salvador is USCS Human Resources Employee Experience Manager. “As we celebrate this year’s Connect for a Cause campaign, I am reminded that behind the impressive amount of money raised are the dedicated USCold employees whose belief in a better tomorrow brought them together to raise funds and awareness,” she says. United by a shared vision, they are the true foundation of this campaign and our Cold Crew Cares program defining the fabric of its identity and purpose.”
Here’s a region-by-region look at USCS’s Connect for a Cause efforts and activities.
CENTRAL
The Central Region supported Tunnel to Towers (T2T) in 2023. Len Howard, USCS Minooka, IL, Warehouse Supervisor, led the charge. “I believe people want to do good and are looking for ways to contribute,” says Howard. “Teaming up with T2T is a way to provide the support families need to help them overcome challenges. It makes me feel great volunteering and making a positive impact.”
Howard emphasizes how every contribution, donation, and volunteer hour—no matter how small—makes a difference in someone’s life. The Central team, under Len’s leadership, stayed closely connected with Andrew McClure, Senior Manager, Development for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. McClure met several times over the course of the campaign helping to educate and engage USCold employees with the mission.
“We’re honored to have the support of USCold Storage,” says McClure. “The entire journey—from first interaction to the final tally being announced—has been nothing short of heartwarming. Tunnel to Towers is honored to have your support!”
WEST
The Western Region raised money for three Children’s Hospitals. These hospitals are a tremendous resource for employees when their little ones need care and raising money for them was very meaningful.
“It has been a tremendous honor to be part of US Cold philanthropy,” says Chris Halsted, West Regional Human Resources Manager. “We have a vibrant workforce passionate about their ability to make an impact. It’s been beautiful to see the dedication they have shown throughout the various events held to raise funds for their cause.”
SOUTH
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been the recipient of the Southern Region’s Campaign for three consecutive years. Barbara Sims, USCS Ft. Worth, TX, Customer Account Supervisor, helped lead the region to raise the most money to date.
“Being a part of Connect for a Cause has made me feel very proud of the company I work for and a part of something so meaningful,” she says. “I am proud that I can tell family members and friends what a wonderful company USCS is and all it has to offer!”
NORTHEAST
USCS’ Northeast Region successfully raised funds and awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Max Sheffler, Training Quality Safety Supervisor at USCS Quakertown, PA, played a key role in leading the NE COLDcrew across the finish line, surpassing their fundraising goal.
“The connection we create and share—by coming together in support of a worthy cause—is true currency. I’d say it brings out our ‘Best in Cold,’” says Sheffler. “I love to see how workplace philanthropy allows USCS employees to realize their capacity to make a difference outside the walls of the warehouse. Don’t underestimate the impact.”
CAMDEN, NJ, HEADQUARTERS
Sharon Costello, Corporate Logistics Billing Lead, Camden, NJ, has been a tremendous spokesperson and ardent volunteer fundraiser for the Unforgotten Haven closely located to US Cold headquarters in Camden.
“I feel taking part in the Connect for a Cause Campaign helps our employees to connect with each other on a more personal level and it can create new friendships outside of work,” says Costello.
USCS’s next Connect for a Cause Campaign resumes on June 1, 2024.
Future Forward
USCS celebrates 2023 achievements, eyes greater gains next year and beyond.
Turning the calendar, reflecting and concentrating on the approaching year is a natural inclination. Then again, to talk with members of USCS’s Sustainability Department, you’ll hear them talk excitedly about 2030 and 2050—as equally important goal dates in the not-too-distant future.
“We’re finalizing our Integrated Sustainability Report but I’m pleased to share so many highlights on our sustainability journey so far,” notes Dan Postlewaite, PE, Director of Sustainability & Engineering. “We’ve completed our Materiality report, an Environmental Impact Assessment and our emissions inventory assessment for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3. This year, we also officially publicly committed to the global Science Based Targets initiative.”
He adds, “In our upcoming report, we’re committing to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030 and a net zero emissions status by 2050 or earlier. We’re also targeting 1.5% year-over- year reductions in energy.”
For the record, USCS’s efforts are well coordinated and supported. Postlewaite’s team includes a dedicated Sustainability Department. Moreover, there’s a Sustainability Development Committee (SDC), which represents all functional areas of the business. There’s also an Executive Sustainability Committee (ESC) with executive leadership engagement for SDC goals and commitments.
“We are working with our SDC and ESC groups and developing what SMART targets,” Postlewaite notes. “These are ‘Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time- Based’ goals. In conjunction, we’re developing and even refining a Sustainability Roadmap, which will have measurable metrics in accordance with sustainability reporting structures.”
Looking ahead to next year, USCS’s Sustainability Department and SDC plan to test and implement several initiatives, including …
… a pilot program with granulized analysis of water and energy use data from six facilities. The goals not only are to improve the accuracy of sustainability data but to more deeply understand and identify efficiency improvement opportunities.
… wide-scale implementation of more energy-efficient process technologies, such as blast freeze.
… more than $100 million in investments for on-site renewable energy infrastructure improvements.
United States Cold Storage is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. And it’s in good company—or should we say “companies.” USCS officially joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in September 2023 and became one of more than 6,000 private businesses committed to halve GHG emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
“USCS prides itself on being ‘Best in Cold’ so it’s a natural next step for USCS to join the business community in adhering to science- based targets to mitigate climate change,” says USCS Sustainable Development Manager Sara Cook. “This reflects our commitment to people, planet, and performance.”
SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi started after the 2015 Paris Agreement, where world governments committed to efforts that limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that global warming must not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial temperatures to avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change.
Targets are considered “science- based” if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Today, SBTi defines and promotes best practice in emissions reductions and net- zero targets in line with climate science. It also provides technical assistance and expert resources to companies who set science- based targets. SBTi also has experts who provide companies with independent assessment and validation of targets.
For the record, USCS has been on its own, similar targets-based journey since 2020. In just the last few years alone, the company has completed its own Materiality report, an Environmental Impact Assessment as well as an emissions inventory assessment for Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 levels.

McClellan Park is Sustainable
We are deeply committed to sustainability, actively pursuing goals that include significantly reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing energy efficiency. One of our major sustainability initiatives is the installation of solar panels, with plans to produce 1.5 megawatts of AC power. This project, currently in the permitting phase, is a bold step toward harnessing renewable energy, aiming to decrease our reliance on the grid and further our sustainability efforts.
We’ve also embarked on the electrification of our fleet, beginning with electric yard trucks and planning to expand this to include more electric vehicles. This move is part of our broader commitment to lower emissions and promote sustainability in our transportation operations.
Our collaboration with local utility providers has been instrumental in advancing our sustainability goals. Through this partnership, we’ve been able to invest in technology and infrastructure improvements, including enhanced time-of-day cooling and automated energy controls. These advancements, managed through modern, computer-controlled systems, have significantly boosted our efficiency and effectiveness in energy use.
“By being enrolled in Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s PowerDirect program, US Cold is supporting our community and helping save energy when demand for electricity is at its peak. Hello Cold Chain Colleagues,
2024 is off to an incredible start, and we have already seen some fantastic accomplishments.
Our journey continues with a deep commitment to excellence and sustainability, and I’m excited to share some key highlights with you.
First, I want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to the team in McDonough, GA for winning Kellanova’s Top Gun award for the second year in a row (formerly Kellogg’s). This achievement underscores our dedication to customer service, operational excellence, and the great partnership we have with Kellanova for over 40 years.
As they have grown, we have grown. We appreciate that they foster such service focused initiatives, which drive us to continuously improve, evolve and excel. It’s through competitions like Top Gun that our team remains motivated and focused on meeting our customers’ key performance indicators.
Second, our dedication to sustainability has reached new heights with the establishment of two highly important targets. Our board has recently approved our ambitious goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030, alongside our commitment to being SBTi (science based target initiatives) compliant, which means reducing 95% of our scope one and two carbon emissions by 2032.
A huge thank you to our sustainability team, led by Dan Postlewaite, with Sara Cook’s exceptional ability to translate complex sustainability topics into achievable goals. Their efforts have made it possible to develop a clear and comprehensive roadmap to reach our renewable energy goals. This plan includes a combination of energy reduction, solar arrays, green energy tariffs, and purchase power agreements for renewable energy. We are confident that these initiatives will not only lead the industry but also resonate with our customers, reinforcing our position as a sustainability leader.
In line with our ambitious sustainability journey, we are making substantial investments in modernizing our infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency. Over the next three years, we will invest $25 to $30 million in modernizing our blast freezers, expecting a 10% reduction in related power consumption. Additionally, we are incorporating AI and machine learning into our refrigeration control systems to achieve a further 10% efficiency gain overall across our network.
These improvements are critical steps toward our sustainability goals and will significantly reduce our environmental impact. We have fully vetted a green energy plan that outlines our pathway to 100% renewable power by 2030. This plan includes energy reduction, on-site solar generation, renewable energy purchase agreements, and green tariffs.
These are all significant sustainability milestones. The board, the sustainability team, and I are incredibly excited about our journey forward.
In closing, I want to reiterate how inspired I am by the dedication and impact of our Cold Crew. Each day, you prove what it means to be the Best in Cold. It’s a great time to be in the cold chain industry, and it’s an even greater time to be at USCS.
Together, we are shaping the future of cold storage with innovation, a Best in Service commitment, and sustainability at the forefront.
All the best,
Larry Alderfer | President & CEO
They’re Gr-r-reat!
USCS McDonough 1 earns “Top Gun” award for second straight year.
Perhaps it’s true when they say that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
What changed? Last October saw The Kellogg Company spin-off its cereal business into another publically traded unit, the WK Kellogg Company. In turn, a newly formed Kellanova, Chicago, emerged with a portfolio of the company’s snack brands (including Pringles, Pop-Tarts, Cheez-It, RX Bar) and its popular frozen businesses (including Eggo and Morningstar).
What stayed the same? Kellanova kept its long-standing “Top Gun” program to reward 02 outstanding third-party warehouse supplier partners. Interestingly enough, USCS McDonough 1 (Atlanta) also repeated as the Top Gun honoree. After winning for its 2022 performance, McDonough 1 led all third party warehouses in meeting or exceeding Kellanova’s Top Gun performance criteria (see below) in 2023.
“We found out about our award during a daily conference call with Kellanova,” says Dedric Thomas, USCS McDonough 1 General Manager. “Our team—as a whole— really did an outstanding job. Not only am I referring to team members on the floor but also everyone in our Inventory Department through Customer Service. I was impressed about our turn times and inventory accuracy. It was good to see how the team was able to overcome any and all challenges involving the sheer number of daily inbound and outbound shipments.
This is truly a team win.” Also excited to celebrate that team win were members of Kellanova’s supply chain group, including Kandi Crowe, Senior Director of Distribution. Crowe and Kellanova officials visited McDonough to announce the award and present prizes. Awards included televisions, grills, drill sets, Amazon gift certificates and even paid vacation days. The event included a catered lunch and even ended with a fireworks show.
“The USCS McDonough location continues to be a ‘Top Gun’ powerhouse in 2023! With the win in 2022 this could have driven the site to be complacent, but they never took their foot off the pedal and continued to show they are the best,” says Crowe. “Dedric, Thomas, Lisa, and Jessie reflect this ‘Culture of Best’ every day with the Kellanova Team. I know they will continue to strive to be the best in 2024 and beyond.”
For his part, Dedric is quite appreciative of the Kellanova relationship. “They’re the only account that even recognizes our service,” he notes. “They also provide constant feedback and always ask is there anything that we need from them.”

How I Help Feed America
Question connects people to purpose, USCS’s supply chain role to serve America.
With approximately 4,000 employees and a nationwide network of 39 coast-to-coast locations, United States Cold Storage handles the food served every day at America’s table. And that includes everything from ice cream to entrées and snacks to seafood.
At US Cold, members of the “Cold Crew” understand the vital role they play in safeguarding temperature-sensitive products to ensure quality and safety. To gain insights into each employee’s sense of purpose in this process, USCS asked a group of employees how their jobs contribute to feeding America. Here are some of their responses:
Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan
USCS’s new Green Energy Plan sets industry-leading example for new strategies, technologies.
There’s an adage that applies to every facet of life and logistics: plan your work and work your plan. When it comes to sustainability, this year finds the USCS Sustainable Engineering team making transparent and trackable plans all the way to 2050.
The group’s new Green Energy Plan (GEP) not only lays out energy and emission reduction targets but also critical action steps across every facet of business. “Our GEP is a milestone achievement,” says Sara Cook, Sustainable Development Manager. “We consolidated the collective expertise of internal functions, staff and external sources to develop a forecasting tool.
It predicts the energy needs, costs of renewable electricity solutions, and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions for each solution. Our forecasting is dynamic and will even incorporate illustrated decision points—over time—for the business to consider.
Overall, the GEP connects clearly into USCS’s SMART targets for Climate and supports USCS’s net zero strategy.” Rob Moore is a USCS Project Engineer working with solar and energy technologies. “I’m particularly proud of our ambitious plans to pursue on-site solar,” he says. “As an organization, it would have been very easy for us to choose easier mechanisms of decarbonization—such as purchasing offsets to reduce our carbon footprint.
The GEP outlines our pathway to leveraging all these solutions in a way that enables company resilience, growth, and performance. This is all in keeping with USCS’s ‘Best-in-Cold’ approach.”
Sara Cook
Sustainable Development Manager
That certainly would have been the path of least resistance. However, we’ve decided to build and operate our own on-site, renewable energy sources, which have environmental benefits beyond what a purchased carbon offset could achieve.”
USCS’s goals are to:
1. Achieve 100% renewable electricity (RE) consumption by 2030
2. 95% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2032 (from a 2022 base year)
3. Net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Cook adds USCS is taking an industry-leading step by formally submitting its targets to the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi) for validation in 2024. How will USCS get there? Cook identifies five key areas of activity and focus involving both how USCS invests in its own infrastructure as well as how it intelligently sources renewable energy inputs.
These steps include:
-
Ongoing investment in building and energy efficiency practices, technologies, and innovations
-
Continued development of on-site renewable infrastructure and energy storage capabilities.
Cook notes, for example, that the more USCS can generate its own power, the more it reduces stress on local electricity grids and establishes even more reliable energy at USCS warehouses.
Smarter buying practices include procuring renewable electricity via Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contracts. These effectively underwrite renewable energy generation and expansion and lead to an overall “greener” power grid. USCS will also procure utility supplied renewable electricity offered through utility programs called Green Tariffs.
Finally, it also plans to buy renewable electricity attributes or certificates (RECs) to offset any remaining USCS green energy and GHG reduction needs. These voluntary markets in the US offer companies a way to invest in renewable electricity generation in a scalable manner. Looking back, USCS’s sustainability story involves more than two decades of support from its parent, John Swire & Sons.
It was more than 20 years ago that USCS focused on warehouse energy efficiency with investments in lighting efficiency, advanced refrigeration controls, variable frequency drives, and highspeed refrigerated doors. In 2007, USCS installed its first roof top solar array at its Tulare, CA, warehouse. These renewable power efforts reflect planning for on-site resiliency and emission reduction.
Since then, John Swire & Sons has created the architecture for USCS to engage in renewable electricity procurement opportunities. “The GEP outlines our pathway to leveraging all these solutions in a way that enables company resilience, growth, and performance,” says Cook. “This is all in keeping with USCS’s ‘Best-in-Cold’ approach.”
Name Says it All
USCS’s new SmartMove platform a “game changer” for LTL load planning.
The adage that “less is more” extols the virtues of simplicity. Then again, United States Cold Storage puts its own twist on the phrase. A new SmartMove program for lessthan-truckload (LTL) shipping promises more benefits for both Cold Crew team members and customers alike. And ultimately, it was a simple move—soliciting direct input from USCS load planners—that led to a breakthrough.
USCS Logistics’ COLDshare Consolidation (CsC) combines smaller customer orders— all headed to the same destination—into the same truck. This provides LTL customer savings because processors effectively share the total cost of the truck with others headed to the same or nearby locations. USCS Automation & Logistics Analytics Supervisor Luis Sanchez says USCS’s new SmartMove taps greater levels of information than is feasible for any one person to process.
It leverages and applies artificial intelligence to a mixture of data points— such as real-time traffic information—to select the optimal route after testing hundreds of thousands of different load combinations. “Load building optimization tools have been a challenge for the transportation industry for many years,” notes Keith Mowery, Executive Vice President, Logistics & West Region.
“Although they integrate various data points to build loads, they traditionally have been very rigid, where the ‘rules’ set applied to all shipments. For example, the trucks traveled the same miles per hour—no matter if the load was delivering in a major metropolitan market or traveling across an interstate highway. And in the traditional scenario, all deliveries took the same amount of time to deliver. Users know that this not true in the real world, so getting buy-in from the planners who built loads was very difficult.”
He notes, “SmartMove is able to build much better loads that take into account the uniqueness of the shipment. Based on historical data, it takes into account the unloading time at that delivery point, based on time of day and size of shipment. Additionally, it is able to consider traffic conditions and even potential weather impact. Because of this flexibility and constant evolution, users are trusting the loads being built and have bought into this project.”
Luis Sanchez has developed and piloted SmartMove from April 2023 through February 2024. He credits USCS load planners for the new tool. “We focused heavily on building a userfriendly platform for load planners by truly listening to their feedback. We like to say that the platform was ‘built by load planners for load planners’ because it was so heavily inspired by the feedback we received. Even the ‘SmartMove’ name was suggested by a load planner! SmartMove is the first time we’ve been able to fully take advantage all of the different data points we can access.”
Lauren Fitzpatrick, Senior Manager, Logistics Systems, shares a few insights from USCS’s process. “In earlier versions, the optimization software still had to be manually fine tuned to work,” she says. “It required constant maintenance and monitoring. In contrast, SmartMove integrates historical data and automatically brings that into consideration—even with finer points, such as dwell time.” She adds, “Other optimization tools didn’t empower endusers to decide what they liked and what they didn’t like.
Ultimately, I think we achieved better buy-in by allowing our load coordinators to have full control over the process. They still make the call and can give feedback about why something didn’t work, which we can later incorporate back into the model. With these types of improvements, we have been able to find a balance between efficiency and reality.” Instant Benefits, More to Come Sanchez says USCS already has improved its on-time delivery rate with SmartMove. Moreover, he says the platform lets load planners become more proactive problem solvers.
“This allows load planners to focus on what truly matters: servicing customers and ensuring that when issues inevitably arise, we can quickly resolve them.”
Looking ahead, Sanchez says USCS is incorporating SmartMove into its internal reporting so logistics reps can better help customers see how their deliveries are managed and optimized. Sanchez adds that USCS would like to further automate scheduling and carrier selection—all with a focus on reducing risk— when making any one shipment.
“I want to thank Luis and Logistics Continuous Improvement Specialist Reiner Scherzinger for their work during the past year,” Mowery concludes. “They traveled across the country to get feedback from users and coordinated our building of this tool, which is a game changer for our COLDshare program. We have increased truck utilization, which means there are fewer trucks on the road, and we have improved on-time service. This will ensure we continue to control costs for our customers while providing a sustainable solution for years to come.”

Eyes on the Prize
New Vice President of Technology Bobby Kareer casts vision for USCS’s growing Center of Digital Excellence.
There are moments when professional success and personal achievement require eyes on the prize—finding the right focus and casting the right vision. That’s certainly the story of Bobby Kareer, who was promoted this April to USCS Vice President of Technology.
This story starts in December 2020 when Kareer, a software engineer, joined USCS and shifted his focus from financial investments to food. He began at USCS as Senior Director of Software and soon embraced every aspect of supply chain data management.
“It is my firm belief that software development practices and challenges transcend industry domains. However, speaking and understanding the language and priorities in the world of logistics and 3PL is something that I had to work hard at to learn and appreciate,” he says. “It helped accelerate my education by finding commonalities—such as ledger account balances and inventory balances—and the need for transparency related to how transactions (trade bookings vs. receipts/ orders) impact things.”
From a broader perspective, Kareer’s arrival and new duties were ideally timed for a period of pivotal technology growth at USCS. He points to two particular areas of focus. “My first role was to help transform our software engineering practice at USCS,” he recalls. “I worked with our technology team to ‘re-shore’ our software practice to Camden (from overseas) and transition our working model to become agile and quality driven. I am happy to report that three years in, our center of mass in technology crew has shifted to the US. We operate with a qualityfirst mindset and always look to get better at delivering value to the business.”
As software director, Kareer was responsible for USCS Phenix software and the company’s digital teams. In mid-2023, USCS promoted him to Senior Software Director and he assumed broader responsibilities for both the company’s product and B2B/EDI integration software groups. Looking back on last year, Kareer says one major milestone was to ensure that all new Phenix features and capabilities were covered with automated quality assurance tests. “This helps us curb the addition of new quality debt as we deliver releases on a monthly basis to our facilities,” he says.
“Additionally, our working practice also has improved to reflect key challenges through retrospective meetings. At the end of the day, we need to deliver better quality systems at a faster pace so that our facilities can operate efficiently. In turn, this leads to happier customers and partners.”
In this Cold Cast, Dr. Anna Johnson and Bobby discuss technology’s role in the cold chain, and the future of technology at USCS.

Going Forward – Face to Face
USCS hosts Customer Advisory Board to better listen, learn and support shippers.
They say there’s a reason we have two ears and just one mouth—it underscores the primary importance of listening. And that’s exactly why USCS values its two-year-old Customer Advisory Board (CAB).
Coming out of the nation’s COVID pandemic, USCS first formed this board to better align itself with customers’ day-to-day business realities and requirements.
USCS’s CAB involves as many as 13 different customer accounts ranging by product type, geography and size. Since CAB’s first in- person meeting in Dallas in May 2022, the group also met once—virtually—last fall. USCS hosted this year’s in-person meeting this February in Atlanta.
“We just hosted our most recent installment of CAB in Atlanta. After a tour of our McDonough II automation, our customers assembled to learn about USCS’s key initiatives, discuss the state of the industry and identify areas for collective improvement,” says Andrew Pavlicin, USCS Program Manager.
“At a high level, we want to generate a ‘feedback loop’ from our customer base and ensure we are meeting their needs and providing quality service,” he adds. “USCS seeks feedback from our customers to determine the CAB meeting areas of focus and our agendas likely will always change— based on what is happening in the industry and market. Ultimately, we believe that there is mutual benefit. Our expectation is that the customer also will gain insight into USCS’s strategic direction and benefit from peer-to- peer shared experiences.”
Pavlicin specifically points to five CAB objectives:
-
Capture Customer Feedback: Provide a platform where customers feel free to share direct feedback about their businesses and cold chain needs. This gives USCS better insight into their needs and preferences.
-
Build Stronger Relationships: Build stronger interpersonal relationships with customers.
-
Generate Ideas: Use CAB as a source
for new innovative ideas. Discussion can provide insight to ideas and/or programs not previously considered.
-
Market Research: Gain and share insights about customer behaviors and trends.
-
Brand Advocacy: Create positive customer experiences and build USCS’s reputation.
